CPEC Logistics - Opportunities, Challenges and Way Forward

  1. Chinese One Belt One Road (OBOR) concept, the biggest initiative after Marshal Plan (1948-1951), aims to connect Asia, Europe and Africa along 6x Corridors, including sea and land routes, across the continents. Through OBOR Chinese exports would find new avenues across the globe and would facilitate its imports as well. CPEC is one of the most critical corridors in this context linking Western China with the outer world. It is therefore imperative that we develop a long term perspective on all important logistics aspects so that we are prepared to ensure smooth transition of Pakistan, from a geographical hub to a regional player.
  2. However, understanding the prospects of trade enhancement / facilitation at border crossing points will serve as a basis for planning and development of transportation infrastructure and logistic industry. Moreover, it will guide the transport sector, on capacity enhancement for movement across the borders of regional countries. Such logistic ventures will of course, demand abundant financial / transport resources, technical expertise and favorable business environment, to which mutual collaboration is the key factor.
  3. To accrue maximum benefits out of this discourse a critical analysis of opportunities available, likely challenges and a map marking for way forward are needed.
